The world will add almost 2 billion people over the next 25 years. More important, over 4 billion people will ascend to the middle class, mostly in the developing world. Thanks to its special low-emissivity (low-e) coating, a window made with Solarban 70XL glass allows 65 percent less heat from the sun to enter your home than a window with ordinary glass. That can reduce summer cooling costs by up to 25 percent. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) is a measure of how much solar heat is transmitted through the glass. A lower SHGC means less summer heat.

Innovations from chemistry are integral to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) energy efficiency initiatives. One example of chemistry innovations used by DOD to help achieve its energy objectives is BASF’s Elastospray spray polyurethane foam (SPF), which the U.S. Army uses to insulate military tents, hospitals and other fixed installations.
SPF helps lower heating and cooling costs and energy consumption by preventing air leakage and maintaining comfortable temperatures within buildings. At the Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital at the Fort Polk army base in Louisiana, for example, BASF Elastospray provided the roofing system with a seamless application, severe weather resistance and leak-free performance, reducing energy consumption and cost.
